TMJ Treatment

Do you suffer from tension headaches, migraines, clicking or popping noises when opening the mouth, painful aching jaw, sensitive teeth, or soreness in your neck or back? According to the American Dental Association, more than 15 percent of American adults suffer from chronic facial pain, which may be the result of problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Our practice, which serves North Canton, Akron, and surrounding areas, offers TMJ information and treatment to help patients find relief from facial pain.

What is TMJ Disorder?

The TMJ is located on the side of the head near the ears and connects the lower jawbone to the skull (temporal bone) under your ear. It plays an essential role in a variety of activities, including speaking, chewing, and making facial expressions. When the TMJ stops functioning properly, it can result in facial pain to the teeth, surrounding tissues, joints, and other muscles. All these symptoms can be caused by a variety of things, including a habitual grinding or clenching of the teeth during sleep, a misaligned bite, a dislocated TMJ, or even arthritis. The intense grinding of these powerful jaw muscles causes pain to the teeth, surrounding tissues, joints, and other muscles.

TMJ Disorder Diagnosis and Treatment at Our Practice

Dr. Farinacci can help determine the cause of your facial pain and make sure you receive the proper TMJ treatment. By examining your bite, he can determine whether the problem is caused by stress or misalignment. If facial pain is caused by stress to the TMJ, mouth guards can be used to relieve stress by making it more difficult to clench the jaws. If facial pain is caused by misalignment, jaw exercises can be done to help the patient learn to control the jaw muscles. Please contact our North Canton general dentistry center, which also serves Akron, for more information on TMJ treatment options.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal, or gum, disease is the most prevalent dental problem in adults. It is caused by toxic bacteria that attacks the mouth's soft tissues and causes a serious infection, which can lead to loss of teeth and serious health problems if left untreated. Fortunately, North Canton dentist David Farinacci specializes in periodontics and has extensive experience in treating gum disease.

Stages of Periodontal Disease

There are several stages of periodontal disease. The earliest and mildest stage of periodontal disease is called gingivitis. Early symptoms include red and swollen gums that bleed during brushing and flossing. Other symptoms include a receding gum line, bad breath, and changes in your bite. If detected and treated early, gingivitis is reversible. However, if it is not treated, it can lead to periodontitis.

Periodontitis is the advanced stage of periodontal disease, and comes in many forms:

Dr. Farinacci Specializes in Periodontics

Dr. Farinacci can help patients in the early stages of periodontal disease reverse the damage with non-surgical treatments such as medication, scaling, and root planing. If discovered late, Dr. Farinacci can use one of the effective cosmetic procedures offered at his practice such as crown lengthening, soft tissue grafts, pocket reduction, and other procedures to restore the mouth’s healthy, beautiful appearance. Please contact our North Canton general dentistry office to learn more about periodontics or to schedule an appointment.

Snoring Treatment

Snoring is a problem that affects millions of people of all ages, although it is more common in men and people who are overweight. It occurs when muscles and soft tissues in the throat relax during sleep and result in a narrower air passage. When air passes through the area, the soft tissues vibrate, creating a rapid flapping noise. Snoring can be caused by a variety of things, including smoking, alcohol, obesity, allergies, hypothyroidism, fatigue, and more.

The Dangers of Snoring

Snoring is a very serious problem that can lead to dangerous health conditions. According to a study conducted by the UCLA School of Dentistry, the constant struggle for air can result in increased blood pressure and a higher risk for stroke. Snoring can also lead to a condition known as sleep apnea, which is characterized by a complete blockage of the air passage. Snoring also disturbs the sleeping pattern of snorers and their loved ones, leaving them sleep deprived and more at risk for serious accidents during waking hours.

Snoring Treatment Therapy Options

According to the Sleep Therapy Clinic, 30% of adults over age 30 snore at night. If you are one of the millions of Americans who snore, Dr. Farinacci can help you and your partner sleep soundly. He offers various oral appliance therapies for effective snoring treatment at his North Canton practice. Preventive Care

In addition to twice-daily brushing and regular flossing, proper tooth maintenance requires routine professional preventive care. A healthy mouth and beautiful smile both require regular examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and periodontal screenings. Exercising proper preventive care can help patients avoid more costly dental problems down the road. Dr. Farinacci also uses advanced ViziLite® Plus technology for oral cancer screening and detection. Patients can keep their mouths disease-free and teeth strong by scheduling a cleaning or checkup at our North Canton general, cosmetic and restorative dentistry practice.

Children's Dentistry

Children begin to develop teeth before birth, with the first primary, or baby, teeth emerging as early as four months. Oral care should begin right after birth. Permanent teeth begin forming at age six. A child’s dental experiences are important to having a clean, healthy adult mouth. Quality routine care in children translates into better oral hygiene as they get older. At the office of David Farinacci, DDS, we know that going to the dentist is not always easy for a child, and our staff is dedicated to catering to the needs of our younger patients. Contact our North Canton general dentistry practice today if your child needs a checkup or cleaning or if you’re interested in learning more about protective sealants.

Sealants

Eating too many foods high in sugar and starch, such as cookies, candy, and soda, can cause serious damage to our teeth. Bacteria found in the mouth can turn the sugar and starch from those foods into acids that attack our tooth enamel, which, over time results in tooth decay. The chewing surfaces on the molars and premolars in the back of your mouth are common places for the development of tooth decay because they have microscopic grooves, pits, and fissures that are hard to reach with toothbrush bristles and floss. A dental sealant is a plastic material that is applied to these areas, creating a protective barrier over your enamel. Sealants have been used successfully and effectively for more than two decades and can benefit both children and adults. If you are interested in dental sealants for yourself or for your children, please contact our North Canton general dentistry office and set up a consultation.

Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy)

Not long ago, if you had a tooth with a diseased nerve, that tooth would have to be extracted. Today, however, root canal therapy allows you to save that tooth. Each tooth contains a long, thin strand of dental pulp that extends down to the root. This “pulp” contains the tooth’s nutrients and nerves. If a tooth’s pulp becomes infected or is injured, the tooth’s nerves die as well. Endodontic treatment is then required to remove the infected pulp before the tooth itself becomes infected and requires removal. The procedure, which is performed under anesthesia, begins with a gap being drilled into the tooth’s crown and into the pulp chamber. The diseased pulp is removed and the chamber is cleaned before the tooth is permanently sealed with a crown. Root canal therapy is often a relatively simple procedure that causes little or no discomfort.

Oral Surgery

Oral surgery may be required for a variety of reasons. Teeth that have been severely injured may need to be extracted. Wisdom teeth may also become misaligned or impacted, making it necessary to be extracted. An accident that causes facial trauma would also likely require oral surgery. Dr. Farinacci understands that, although oral surgery might be necessary to restore beauty and function, many patients experience anxiety and fear when faced with a surgical procedure. However, patients can rest assured that Dr. Farinacci and his knowledgeable staff will regard patient comfort as their primary concern. We can correct a host of dental conditions with oral surgery at our North Canton general dentistry practice.
